Who Can File Here

  • Anyone wishing to file a Motor Vehicle Temporary Lien on behalf of the first lienholder.

    Pursuant to T.C.A. § 39-17-117, it is a Class E felony for any person to knowingly prepare, sign, or file any lien or other document with the intent to encumber any real or personal property when such person has no reasonable basis or any legal cause to place such lien or encumbrance on such real or personal property.


What You Can Do Here

  • File or prepare a new Motor Vehicle Temporary Lien Application to secure an interest in a motor vehicle in the state of Tennessee.
  • The filing fee is $10.00.
  • An additional service fee is charged if filing fees are paid online by e-check, credit card or debit card.
  • Motor Vehicle Temporary Lien Applications can be filed and paid for online (credit/debit card or e-check required). A service fee is charged if filing fees are paid online by e-check, credit card or debit card. Alternatively, documents can be printed and mailed to the office of the Secretary of State along with a payment for the required filing fee (no service fee applies).
  • Pursuant to T.C.A. §47-29-102 a handling charge of $30.00 or the written amount of the item, whichever is less, will be charged on returned paper checks and electronic checks.
